What you are signing up for

A clear picture now saves disappointment later.

What the five days are

  • Neuromotor training. Structured practice that uses the brain’s ability to rewire itself (neuroplasticity), with left-right coordination at the centre.
  • Active and repetitive. Hundreds of clean repetitions a day, in short bouts with rest in between. You move; we guide, count and adjust.
  • Whole body. Your stronger side helps teach your weaker side, and every exercise trains the link between brain and movement.
  • Aimed at new patterns. Practice toward things your body cannot do yet, such as a steadier step, a freer arm swing or a hand that opens.

Worth knowing

  • Training, outside healthcare. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy treat and rehabilitate; this week is training, and it works well alongside them.
  • You set the pace of your progress. Five days give you the plan and the start. The hours at home afterwards are what make it last.
  • Safety first. Every exercise has a clear stop rule, and we adjust the load to how you are that day.

Who the intensive is for

6 months or more after a strokeWhether your progress has slowed down or you want to keep improving, even years later.

Built in-house

Equipment designed for stroke survivors

Four patent-pending machines, each made to train one left-right movement pattern that everyday life depends on.

The Front Crawler

Front Crawler

A crawling pattern lying on your front: opposite arm and leg move together, training cross-body coordination.

The Back Crawler

Back Crawler

The same left-right pattern lying on your back, the way babies first learn to move. Your stronger side supports the weaker side. It also calms the system at the start and end of every session.

The Hand Slider

Hand Slider

Both hands move on a guided track, so the affected hand learns to reach, stop on a target and let go.

The Arm Swing Walker

Arm Swing Walker

Walking with a guided, alternating arm swing, retraining the link between your steps and your upper body.

Patent pending, Stroke.Fitness LLC.

Grounded in research on neuroplasticity

The training protocol is designed and overseen by Arjan Kuipers, Head of Training and clinical neuroscientist, with more than 30 years of experience in functional neurology. The equipment and exercises follow current research on movement, coordination and how the brain organises both. As the science moves on, so does the protocol.

Questions we often hear

How long after my stroke can I join?

The intensive is designed for people who are 6 months or more past their stroke. There is no upper limit: people train with us many years after their stroke.

Is four hours a day too much for me?

The four hours include warm-up, short training bouts and real rests. We adjust the load to how you feel each day, and on a tired day we do less.

Do I need to be able to walk?

No. Much of the work happens lying down, on hands and knees or seated. We start at your level and build from there.

Is this a medical treatment?

It is training. It does not replace your doctor, physiotherapist or occupational therapist, and it can run alongside their care.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, flat shoes, any brace or walking aid you use every day, water and a snack. A companion is welcome.

What happens when I get home?

You receive a filmed home programme and 12 months of access to the online programme, so you can keep training day by day.
